I first heard of Lucy Rose on Radio 1 when her song Like an Arrow was the 'Track of the Day.' I really liked the individuality of her sound. I downloaded her new album Work it Out last Wednesday before hearing any of her other songs so I could do an honest review.
The uniqueness of Like an Arrow is carried through the whole album. Her voice is something I don't know what to compare to. The only person I can think it is fairly similar to it Sam Smith because her voice is so effortlessly soulful like his. If I picture her recording her album, I can't imagine her just standing still in front of the mic. You can tell she's very passionate about her music. The music itself is as different as her voice. Some songs, like She'll Move, have a hint of similarity to songs featured on Ben Howard's recent album I Forget Where We Were, whereas other songs, such as Our Eyes, have a slight pop/Two Door Cinema Club kind of vibe. The album is very chilled with some songs having a bit of a summery, pop-like edge but still with an elegant feel, which I don't think I've really heard in a long time. For this reason, I think it would be the perfect album to listen to on the beach or having a relaxing night in. Its refreshing to hear new 'pop' songs that aren't dance or have the seventies twist that a lot of artists seem to be doing at the moment. Its a fresh style I'm a fan of.

However, there are downsides. As much as I like a lot of the songs, they sound pretty similar to each other. Some songs are more upbeat than others, but that doesn't change the fact she uses the all the same instruments in the majority of the songs. Similar themes are presented in each song too as well as the structure of the songs and lyrics. Although I enjoy her original sound, it would've been nice to hear some diversity in her songs.
That being said, I do think she is an artist people need to look out for. She's 'up-and-coming', and I'm excited to see what else she can bring to the table. I would purchase this album if you enjoy listening to new artists, want to hear something a bit different or would like a good, chilled addition to your summer playlist.
My favourite songs on this album are Our Eyes, Koln and Till The End and overall would rate this album 3 out of 5.
I've got a pretty busy week this week - stay tuned!
From,
Eleanor
