December Beauty Discoveries
It's no coincidence that the only 'beauty discovery' posts I've done this year come in July (my birthday month) and December (Christmas time) - this year I've been incredibly lucky and received some gorgeous beauty gifts that I've slapped on my face and pushed to the limits as soon as I could. This Christmas was no exception. And what better time to test some beautiful, sparkly new products than in party season itself? So strap in for the eye shadows dreams are made of, an eyeliner that doubles as an excellent freckle-maker, and lipsticks that will make you say "I can't believe these aren't butter".
*Disclaimer alert* - in no way am I bragging about these gifts! I'm super duper lucky to have received them and these are honest reviews of the products. Okay? Okay.
If you guys read my July Beauty Discoveries post, you'll know that my friend Rachel always kills it with the eye shadow palette gifts. Well kids, she's done it again. Another beautiful cruelty-free palette courtesy of I Heart Revolution, the mini Rose Gold Chocolate palette is the perfect all-year-round compact you can use day-to-night. The shimmer shades in here are particularly stunning, especially when you wet the brush - the pigment is there to stay. There is a fair bit of fall out and some of the shades are a bit patchy (but definitely buildable!) which makes it slightly harder to blend. Having said that, I really do love the versatile range of pretty looks you can achieve with such a cute little palette, with for any kind of occasion.
I'm well aware that MAC is unfortunately not a cruelty-free brand, and as much as I swear by buying cruelty-free products myself, this was a really thoughtful gift picked out for me as a beauty obsessive which someone spent time and money on. This holiday set came in a gorgeous neon-green makeup bag and is filled with some amazing MAC goodies - so if you're a fan of the brand, grab it while you still can! Firstly, we'll chat about the eye shadow palette. I've never tried MAC eye shadows myself but know so many people who rave about them. Yeah, I can defo see why. This palette is stunning. The shadows are all wonderfully pigmented, beautifully buttery and blend incredibly well. The standout shade for me here is Heartwork, which is a warm bronze shimmer; this was the first shadow I tried and I was immediately saying wow to my mirror. All of the shadows are amazingly textured, but the shimmers - especially Heartwork - just astounded me with how pigmented they are and how well they apply.
Next, we come to the In Extreme Dimension Mascara. I know there's a lot of hype around this mascara too, and I was in need of a new one, so this couldn't have come at a better time. My main priority in a mascara is to define the lashes, which this one does excellently. It manages to hold a good curl throughout the day as well, and it's lovely and thickening. However, if you are emotionally challenged like myself, warning: this one is not cry-proof. I can't remember what emotionally-charged episode of Friends I was watching but boy, I had panda eyes by the end of watching it. And despite this, it isn't the easiest to get off at the end of the day either. That being said, I do really enjoy using it and will probably be my go-to as an everyday mascara for a while.
Lastly, we have the Tecknakohl Liner in Photogravure. Firstly, love the product name, very punny. I love how thin this liner is so you can really get into your waterline with it. It also makes for the perfect freckle-dotter and have been turning to this much more to apply fake freckles instead of my usual pencil brush and a brown eye shadow (although, you do have to smoosh it in with your finger a lot more than you would an eye shadow). Other than that, I think it is just your basic eyeliner - there isn't anything too groundbreaking about it. But it's good and it works, so it'll be hanging around for a while.
This was SUCH an exciting gift for me as I've wanted to try out Fenty Beauty (which is cruelty-free yayyy) ever since it launched, but never knew what to try first. And with lipstick being my favourite part of the whole makeup shabang, it was a very good choice. This little duo is the ideal gift for any makeup lover, and the shades are to. die. for. First off, we have Spanked - described as a dusty rose, this scrumptious nude colour is a fab everyday shade, and because of it's travel size, a top choice as a handbag lipstick. The second is Griselda, a "bold burgundy", according to Harvey Nichols; it definitely is bold, but comes out a lot more purple-toned to me. As you can tell by the photo I've already gone ham on these lipsticks. Spanked is lusciously creamy while Griselda is perhaps a little less so - I found it harder to apply, and it can get a bit messy, so a lip liner might not go amiss. That being said, they both dry down to lovely matte finishes and are very long lasting. Having a mini duo like this is a great way to dip your toe into Fenty Beauty - I can't wait to see what Rhianna launches next!
I've been so very spoiled this year with my amazing beauty gifts. I'm still finalising it, but however much I adore a lot of them, I don't think any of these products will be showing up in the beauty portion of my 2018 favourites - keep your eyes and ears peeled for that post to find out what made the cut!
From,
Eleanor
