Halloween GRWM: Becoming Mia Wallace

Hey you, happy Halloween! I've never gone all out for Halloween before - I've been a cat for about seven years now - but this year, I decided to do something a little bit more adventurous. And by more adventurous, I mean don a wig. This year's costume choice was a close toss up between Ariana Grande (mostly because I wanted an excuse to get a ponytail extension) and Mia Wallace from Pulp Fiction. I decided to go for the latter. Mia's look is so easy to recreate but looks pretty effective, even if I do say so myself. I love Pulp Fiction, and transforming into Mia has been a lot of fun. So, if you're looking for some last minute costume inspo, or wanted to see how I got Halloween ready in about 15 minutes, you've come to the right place (*plays Uma Thurman by Fall Out Boy for the rest of the day*).

makeup

If you don't want to slap much makeup on your face this Halloween, Mia Wallace is probably one of the best costume ideas for you. She has such a basic makeup look that literally anyone could probably recreate. It's definitely not a glam look, and I wanted to make myself look pretty tired as I was trying to reflect her state during/post overdose (spoilers soz). So, foundation really wasn't a necessity for me, and I didn't put too much concealer under my eyes either so the natural greyish tones of my under-eyes shone through. I think Uma Thurman has got some contour and highlight going on though, so I used the elf bronzer from the St Lucia duo to chisel out my cheekbones slightly, and drew on some highlight on my cheekbones and nose bridge using the Revlon PhotoReady Instafix Highlighting Stick in Gold Light.

For eyebrows, I just used my usual Sexpresso eye shadow from the Too Faced Natural Eyes palette on a brow brush, but did try to make them look a little more stark and define (not easy when you have literally the most out of control brows on the planet). The same palette can be used for eyes too - any neutral palette will probably do the job. You just need a skin-coloured base swept over the lids, and a cool toned brown at the crease. This definitely doesn't have to be neat either - it's potentially even a case of the messier the better when trying to recreate her look at this point in the movie. I also smudged some black eye shadow at the lash line just to add a touch of smokiness and definition. Her lashes are quite natural, so I used the elf Mineral Infused Mascara, which I find gives a subtly defined, slightly fluttery effect. I put quite a lot mascara on my bottom lashes and dabbed the applicator under my eyes to make it look like I had been crying, and also added some of the crease colour under my eyes on a flat eye shadow brush to add to the tired effect.

For lips, I used my favourite product of the moment. I was looking for a nude with a bit of red running through it to match the one Mia wears in the promotional posters, but ended up picking up the best nineties nude shade ever. This is elf's Matte Lip Colour in Praline (can you tell I'm having a moment for elf right now? such a brilliant brand). It's the closest dupe I've found so far to MAC's Velvet Teddy, although it's perhaps a touch darker, and is perfect for emulating a lip look that shot to fame around the time Pulp Fiction hit screens.

 hair and sfx

The only thing I didn't already have in my wardrobe that was very Mia-y was the wig. This is the first time I've ever worn a wig, and when I first got it in the post, I didn't want to take it off for the rest of the day. I must've spent about half an hour just prancing around and posing in the mirror just in awe of what was on my head. This baby is from Amazon; it may not be the best quality wig in the world, but unless I go as Edna Mode next year, I don't really see myself wearing it again - and for the price, I can't really complain.

As well as being my pro photographer, my wonderful now-house-mate Emma was my pro nosebleed-er as well. She used a cotton bud to dab red face paint around my nostrils and down to my lip, then used a sea sponge to apply some fake blood on the top. Using a sea sponge adds a more scab-like effect to it, which looks pretty cool if you ask me. So thank you Emma, for being my saviour once again.

outfit

Just like with the makeup, you more than likely have everything you need to dress like Mia Wallace in your wardrobe already. My outfit consisted of an age 14-15 school shirt - cos all 5 ft 3 of me can still fit in them - from Asda, black leggings from Primark (similar) and some loafers from Dorothy Perkins. If you wanna Mia to the max, she does wear flared trousers in the movie (much like these ones) but a.) I knew I wouldn't suit them and b.) I wanted to keep to things I already owned so I didn't have to spend too much money. I also added a black bralette from H&M (similar) underneath the shirt, as Mia's black bra is revealed in the movie when Vincent uses the epipen on her. I love the straps on this one; I just think it adds something a little extra to the outfit.

And that's how to become Mia Wallace in about 15 minutes. If you celebrate Halloween, I hope you have a fab one. You're more than welcome to save me some trick or treating sweets:)

From,
Eleanor
