'Look What You Made Me Do': A Win or Sin For Feminism?

Image
So while this definitely isn't my usual kind of post, I'm fascinated by the heated pop culture climate that's reached its peak over the last week or so with Taylor Swift switching to the dark side. For my A Level Media Studies course this year, Taylor was one of my case studies. A year was spent delving into her representation, her sisterly relationship with fans, the way she embraces tech and uses her songs to connect to a young fan base and let them join her A-List girl squad. Is that all redundant now?  The video opens with a swooping shot, quickly moving towards a grave stone that reads "Here lies Taylor Swift's Reputation". That, alongside the gloomy, dark imagery is the first signal of Taylor's shift from the nice girl to this seductive, sharp authority figure. Now, I fully understand the reasons for the transformation: Taylor was tired of playing the victim, getting trampled over by other pop culture elites, and this reincarnation is a...

Five Product Face

Image
Isn't make-up great? I can just walk into Boots or wherever, get completely sucked in, and suddenly I come away with the whole shop in my basket. There are so many gorgeous products on offer these days it's easy to go crazy, but as brands work to develop a load of newfangled things, they often make products that are multi-use...so in reality, you won't end up needing most of the stuff that fills your collection. Though I obviously love spending a load of dolla on make-up, there are some core products in my make-up bag that eliminate the need for everything else, to create quick and glam looks and could keep any collection to a minimum. These are some of my favourites, and I have used them to quickly put together a classic red-lip look that I adore.  Firstly, for base, to narrow down your collection, there's no need for several concealers or foundations that each tackle different things, so all have to be slapped on at once. Colour correctors instantly negate...

Summer in Photos: Remaining Days in Florida

Image
*If you haven't had a gander over the photos snapped during my first three days in Florida, you can find them  here *  I find myself here again, looking over the sunny photos taken in Florida while tucked up in bed looking over gloomy grey skies with a throbbing foot after falling down the stairs in a club (top tip - don't wear really high heels at clubs, nice one Ellie). It's safe to say that it's times like these I really wish I was back in Mickeyland. So, let us reminisce over those remaining days spent there, shall we? DAY FOUR: ANIMAL KINGDOM  I love Animal Kingdom, and how different it is from the rest of the very in-your-face-Disney parks. My favourite rides there is definitely Expedition Everest and the Avatar Flight of Passage (you'll see that in a bit), but the Kilimanjaro Safari is pretty amazing too. We also stayed that evening for the Rivers of Light show - it was nice, but didn't compare to the Happily Ever After fireworks we'd se...

Nina Nesbitt Live [Review]

Image
At around 9 pm on Tuesday 15th August, the lights dim in The Camden Assembly, and the room fills with smokey blue ambience. To loud cheers from the 100-and-something people in the audience, the Edinburgh songstress Nina Nesbitt excitedly walks onto the stage to begin a forty-five minute showcase of both plummeting bass and peppy acoustic anthems. Nina opened with the premier of a new song, which seemed to dictate the pattern many of her other songs will take on the new album - set to be released later this year. Empire, especially, points to directions of rumbling bass, and the exploration of more pop-rock notions. This is compared to the seemingly more simplistic, but tender and often gorgeously raw, tracklist of 2014's freshman album Peroxide. The performance of her teenage-year tracks ( Stay Out, The Apple Tree, Noserings and Shoestrings)  provided little gaps between the new ones, proving that, for her devoted fans, they're as timeless as ever.  It seems Nina ...

A Week in Outfits: Holiday Edition

Image
When it comes to seasonal fashion, I know exactly what I like during Autumn/Winter - if it's cable knit and comfy I'm there. But in the warmer months I like to push the boat out a little bit...and when I say 'push the boat out', I mean wear something that isn't grey or black, and maybe even a skirt or two. Before I went to Florida, I did a big spend up on summer clothes. I couldn't wait to wear them all, so decided to wear them all in the first week of our holiday! So, here's what I wore in Florida, showcasing some old classics and some new faves.  *The brown bag you'll see throughout is from Accessorize ( similar ), and my sunnies are from French Connection  :) The belt is actually my brother's and he has no idea where he got it oops*  TUESDAY: DISNEY'S HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS  As I was travelling on the Monday and was just wearing my comfies, we start with Tuesday. I know I said that sometimes I venture away from grey and black...

Summer in Photos: First 3 Days in Florida

Image
I have no idea how long we've been planning on hopping on a plane over to Florida, but it seems like forever. The day finally arrived last Monday to take our 8-and-a-half hour flight over to Orlando airport and into the sweltering heat. Though our holiday isn't over quite yet, I'm having the best time, exploring all the Disney parks and soaking up the magic. I've taken so many pictures that it's best I break things up a bit, so here are our adventures on our first three days: Disney's Hollywood Studios, Universal Studios Florida, and Magic Kingdom! DAY ONE: HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS Our first day was spent in Disney's Hollywood Studios park. I love the 'golden era' feel of the place, mixed with the incredible Star Wars themed parades and rides. My fave rides though had to be the Rock n Rollercoaster and Toy Story Midway Mania - very different but very fun. We stopped off for dinner at Sci Fi dining, which was set out like a drive in cinema, with pret...
